This plane is a replica of the classic English Record No. 311 shoulder plane, originally designed by Edward Preston & Sons and produced from 1935 to 1984.

A highly versatile tool, it excels at cleaning up inside corners and refining parts for tight-fitting joinery. The blade extends across the entire width of the sole, allowing you to trim precisely into the corner of a rabbet or tenon's cheek and can remove extremely thin layers—down to just a few thousandths of an inch—creating a perfect fit for strong, long-lasting joints.

Designed to function as three planes in one:

  • Shoulder plane – Use with the front extension piece in place for precise shoulder work.
  • Chisel plane – Remove the front extension for flush cuts in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Bull-nose plane – Install the included nose piece for fine detail work in corners and tight spots. Use the included shim with the bull-nose piece to increase the mouth opening as needed.

The body is precision-machined from ductile cast iron with ground soles and sides. Inside edges are finished with a baked-on coating. The 1-1/16" wide cutting iron, made from hardened tool steel (55-60 HRc), is 0.110" thick with a 25° bevel. The blade will need to be sharpened and honed before use. The blade is bedded at 20° and adjusted via a solid brass knurled adjustment screw. The handle is solid, polished brass.

Overall dimensions are 1-1/16" wide, 7-1/2" overall length, and 2-1/4" tall, with a weight of 2-1/2 lbs.

Comes in a presentation box.
