The Moxon Vise, a twin-screw work-holding fixture with a rich history in furniture shops, was first illustrated by Joseph Moxon in his 17th-century book, The Art of Joinery. This versatile workbench accessory is remarkably simple and quick to build, offering the ability to stabilize boards with incredible force during various joinery, shaping, or carving operations. It also allows for raising the workpiece to a more comfortable and ergonomic height. Its high portability enables quick mounting on numerous surfaces, and when not in use, it can be stowed away on a shelf or hung on a wall.

In a traditional Moxon Vise, both screws are attached to the rear jaw, held secure by four nuts, with two mortised in the rear jaw flush with the front surface. However, this design leaves both screws protruding from the front jaw, potentially interfering with the user. Our improved Moxon Vise Hardware Kit addresses this issue by embedding threads in the rear jaw, allowing both rods to pass through the back jaw as the front jaw is opened and closed, leaving the front unobstructed. Additionally, the screws ride in steel bushings, reducing friction and simplifying construction, as nuts no longer require hand mortising in the rear jaw.

This Moxon Vise hardware kit, despite being economical, includes high-quality 3/4-10 threaded rods, nuts, washers, and cast knobs—everything needed (excluding wood) to create a fully functional Moxon Vise. Download the plan HERE that provides measured drawings and comprehensive instructions for the construction process, but customization options abound. You can tailor it to your preferred width, height, and wood choice, offering a multitude of possibilities for individualization.

Great Kit But Needs One Change
This kit is complete and very well made. I found that the bushings are more of a hindrance than a help. Unless the threaded rods are perfectly aligned (mine were not) they make moving the vise jaw quite difficult. They also make it impossible to tighten the jaw at a slight angle when clamping objects that are other than rectangular. I would recommend leaving them out of the build and make each jaw hole slightly rectangular to facilitate easy movement and uneven clamping.

    A little disappointed
I was pretty excited about building a Moxon Vise and to have a full kit is apparently pretty hard to find. I wanted as big a bite as possible, but the 12" thread was not in stock so I got the 10". When I opened the box and read the directions I was frustrated that the 10" thread actually only made about 5-6" opening after accounting for the recommended front and back pieces of hardwood and the hardware. I ordered it from Taylor's site (didn't realize they also offered it on Amazon) so it looks to be a little more hassle to return - I'd have to pay for my own return shipping and I took it out of the box to look at the pieces and the directions which also apparently effects whether they will accept it as a return. Amazon also gave me more info via reviews and I wouldn't have ordered it had I read them prior.

Very nice assembly and priced reasonably
there are bunches of kits on the market for Moxon Vises and this one from Taylor Toolworks is just fine. So many out there are priced like you were buying a sports car rather than some handles, threaded rod, and nuts. this package is easy to build, offers a novel approach over other designs, and is so inexpensive you can make multiple vises of different lengths, mounting methods, etc. for little cost and a bit of labor. there are Youtube videos out showing this unit in operation that support these claims as well...

    Easy assembly and very sturdy
The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I assembled the whole thing in a few hours. I finally got around to using it and it is very secure to the bench. I have just started using a hand plane and this will work very well for what I need.

    Workbench Hardware
I have now built two of Taylor Tool Works small work benches. One for myself and one for my brother in-law. I used the Moxon Vice hardware they offer and it's been great and easy to use. They offer the plans for the bench and I have to say that I use it more now than I use my big bench that I built 20 years ago. I love the little bench and the hardware.

    Works great
I just finished my Moxon Vise using this kit, and so far, it works great. I am looking forward to using it often. All the items in the kit are definitely very rugged and well-made.

    Great kit, great plans
I bought this kit to make a mini bench designed by Mike Taylor. The plans were free, and I thoroughly enjoyed making it. Parts are solid.
