Patterned after the classic Stanley No. 78 Duplex Rabbet and Fillister Plane, which was introduced in 1884 and remained in U.S. production until about 1984, this plane design became one of Stanley's longest-running specialty planes.
The plane incorporates two cutter positions: a rear bed for standard rabbeting and fillister work, and a forward bed for bullnose operations. The cutter has no cap iron and is secured with a thumb screw and adjusted for depth using a toothed lever that engages machined grooves on the back of the blade.
An adjustable depth stop mounted on the right side of the plane controls the maximum depth of cut and locks in place with a thumb screw. A removable fence rides on a threaded guide rod and can be mounted on either side of the plane, allowing both right- and left-handed use. Reversing the fence position can be helpful when working difficult grain directions.
The threaded guide rod features a cross-drilled hole at one end, allowing a nail or similar tool to be inserted for additional leverage when tightening or loosening the rod.
Manufactured from graded cast iron for durability and wear resistance, the plane is finished with a smooth powder-coated surface for long-lasting protection and appearance.
