The "BR" Series Hand Planes are modeled after the legendary Stanley Bedrock planes, produced from 1895 to 1945. Renowned as the "top of the line" in Stanley’s lineup, Bedrock planes remain highly sought after by woodworkers and collectors. These planes are distinguished by their robust construction, increased weight, enhanced rigidity, and signature flat-top side design. Another key feature is the innovative frog adjustment mechanism, which allows precise mouth adjustments without removing the iron. 

This #5 Jack Plane is the ideal tool for smoothing, jointing, flattening and trimming parts to final size.  The  #5 is a "jack of all trades," meaning it can handle a variety of planing tasks. It’s particularly useful for removing material quickly and efficiently in a range of woodworking projects. 

The body and frog are made from ductile cast iron. The sole and sides are precision-lapped flat across the entire length of the plane. Measuring 14" long, 2-1/2" wide, and weighing 5 pounds, this plane strikes the perfect balance of size and mass for tackling a variety of bench tasks. 

The knob and tote are crafted from Sapele wood, then finished and hand-rubbed to provide a surface that feels as good as it looks. The 0.120"-thick, 2"-wide cryogenically treated O1 steel iron is hardened and tempered to 54-58 HRc, will take a keen edge and offers easy sharpening and superior edge retention. 

The frog and its seating are designed based on the early Stanley Bedrock planes. This approach provides fully machined, full-surface contact between the frog and the body, ensuring maximum stability for the cutting iron. Paired with a robust 1/8" thick iron and cap iron, this setup significantly minimizes chatter and tearout, resulting in one of the most rigid and efficient frog clamping systems available in any bench plane. 

This design also allows the cutting iron to advance for an almost "zero-clearance" mouth opening, enabling the creation of exceptionally fine shavings, even on dense or challenging woods. Furthermore, the mouth opening can be adjusted without disassembling the frog and iron assembly. To adjust, simply loosen the two outer screws at the back of the frog seating pad, then turn the central screw clockwise to reduce the mouth size or counterclockwise to enlarge it.

    Great tool for the price
    I don't have experience with the super top of the line planes, but this plane blows lower end planes out of the water. This is a huge step up in my woodworking. I didn't have to do much to get mine set up, I just verified that the sole was flat, and it was mostly flat and only needed minor lapping. The blade was thick and only needed a little bit of sharpening and stropping to get it cutting very nice shavings. I definitely recommend this tool if you want to upgrade from a beginner tool but don't want to break the bank.

    Just fine
    Make no mistake, this is a fine tool. That is it does what it says and feels good in the hand. It is not a premium tool ready to use out of the box, ready to go toe to toe with its high end competitors, as it's trying to advertise as. The sole still needs lapped flat, but not as much as a standard Asian copy. The sides are flat, but angled. Pushing the limits of the blade adjustment for use in shooting. However, there's plenty of material to work with if you don't mind correcting those issues. A massive step up from other planes in the category in that regard.

    Simply the BEST
    Being a fourth generation woodworker, I have used and own many hand planes, from vintage to modern. I use Taylor Toolworks to buy most of my tools and supplies, so when they released their Bedrock series of planes, I had to try one. This quickly became my favorite plane. The fit and finish is great, and the performance is literally second to none. These planes are now replacing my current planes as my go to users in my shop. I will put this plane up agai st ANY on the market. Top notch quality, and a great company as well. Phenomenal job Taylor Toolworks.

    Punches way above its weight class.
    Using quality tools for woodworking isn't really a choice, it's a must if you expect to enjoy the work and get good results, and not many other tools will let you know this undeniable truth like a hand plane. That said, I'm not about to spend $400 plus on a designer hand plane, and buying and restoring vintage Stanleys will come near to these prices as well. I won't even consider anything but a bedrock style plane, so the field gets narrowed a little when looking for a quality, "budget" plane. I found very little information on the Taytool bedrock planes, but for the price, it was worth a try. Out of the bare bones shipping box, I was impressed with the fit and finish overall, especially at the price. After complete disassembly and thorough cleaning, I found the sole wasn't as flat as I liked, and about 15 minutes of lapping got it spot on. The iron was perfectly square, needed very little work to flatten, and took a razor edge quickly. The chip breaker needed a little work to mate to the iron, but a minute on a diamond plate took care of that. As well, the cap iron needed to be flattened a bit, but took just a minute to get it right. After cleaning, oiling and reassembly, I was thrilled to see how excellent the tolerances were when I extended the iron. It was dead on to the mouth of the bed and perfectly centered. 3 passes over a 5/4 poplar board and it was producing 1/2 of 1/1000th, see through shavings, and effortlessly pulled into the work with one hand. I'm blown away at how an hours worth of tinkering on a $140 hand plane will produce such a beautiful tool. As soon as the BR #4 is back in stock, I'm buying it as well. If you're willing to invest an hour of your time, these planes are an unbelievable value, and an excellent tool.
