The "BR" Series Hand Planes are modeled after the legendary Stanley Bedrock planes, produced from 1898 to 1945. Renowned as the "top of the line" in Stanley’s lineup, Bedrock planes remain highly sought after by woodworkers and collectors. These planes are distinguished by their robust construction, increased weight, enhanced rigidity, and signature flat-top side design. Another key feature is the innovative frog adjustment mechanism, which allows precise mouth adjustments without removing the iron.
This #4 Smoothing Plane is the perfect tool to remove minor imperfections, tool marks and chatter left by other planes or machinery. When finely tuned, it can take very thin shavings and create a smooth, polished and ready to finish surface.
The body and frog are made from ductile cast iron. The sole and sides are precision-lapped flat across the entire length of the plane. Measuring 9-3/8" long, 2-3/8" wide, and weighing 4.3 pounds, this plane strikes the perfect balance of size and mass for tackling a variety of finishing tasks.
The knob and tote are crafted from Sapele wood, then finished and hand-rubbed to provide a surface that feels as good as it looks. The 0.120"-thick, 2"-wide tool steel iron is hardened and tempered to 55-60 HRc, offering easy sharpening and superior edge retention.
The frog and its seating are designed based on the early Stanley Bedrock planes. This approach provides fully machined, full-surface contact between the frog and the body, ensuring maximum stability for the cutting iron. Paired with a robust 1/8"-thick iron and cap iron, this setup significantly minimizes chatter and tearout, resulting in one of the most rigid and efficient frog clamping systems available in any bench plane.
This design also allows the cutting iron to advance for an almost "zero-clearance" mouth opening, enabling the creation of exceptionally fine shavings, even on dense or challenging woods. Furthermore, the mouth opening can be adjusted without disassembling the frog and iron assembly. To adjust, simply loosen the two outer screws at the back of the frog seating pad, then turn the central screw clockwise to reduce the mouth size or counterclockwise to enlarge it.

Nicer and heavier than expected
I have more than a handful of restored vintage Bailey hand planes. I've always wanted a Bedrock one, but never really found one out in the wild, so this seemed like a good way to get one. And I was not disappointed. The bed came dead flat, no sharp edges and the blade is a lot thicker than what I'm used to with vintage planes. Overall, its great!

Excellent, especially for the price.
I am a power tool hobby woodworker. I've only ever bought new planes, so I cannot compare this plane to a vintage. However, I've bought 3 big box store/amazon planes (in retrospect, a waste of money; frustratingly difficult to make them usable, so much so that I rarely used them), as well as 3 planes from Veritas (very pricy, but perfect; I actually look for an opportunity to use them because of how enjoyable they are). While not quite a Veritas plane (which are at least 3 times the price), this plane is FAR superior to anything else I have purchased close to this price range. Note, it arrived with parts that were loose and unaligned. I took the plane apart, wiped off the excessive oil it was packed with, properly aligned the frog, tightened up the tote which was loose, and rubbed a little Walrus oil on the tote/knob as they seemed to lack a little finish. However, after about 10 minutes of setup, it worked perfectly and was plenty sharp enough to take thin shavings without any sharpening or honing. For the price, the minor adjustments required are absolutely worth it.

High Quality Great Tool!
Best plane I've ever owned and used. Sole was flat out of the box, and the iron was sharp. Easy to use, predictable results, what more could you ask for?

This is a solid tool
I am pleased with this plane. I have used Staley Bailey planes for 55 years. I have used Lie Neilson planes for 5 years. This plane is between the two. I had to work on the rear handle to keep it from moving, normal work on the plane iron. I am glad I tried it. I would buy it again.

Another great Tay-tool
Just got this new plane and love it. Right out of the box it produces nice shavings. Can't wait to see how good it will be after sharpening.

Can\'t beat it for the price
I don't know how Pres. Trump's tariffs will affect the availalibility and price of this plane, but as of early April 2025, it is an excellent value for the price. I needed to spend about 20-30 minutes flattening the back and honing the iron, but once that was done, it was ready to work smoothly both on edge planing, surface planing, and on a shooting board. I bought it on the recommendation of James Hamilton (Stumpy Nubs), and he noted that the very minor issue of the iron-advancing adjustment knob having a bit of play. I found this to be the case on my plane, but I found tightening the screw on the top of the breaker helped, and--like any new tool--, one just has to get used to its particulars. I have a low angle Veritas smooth plane, and an old but great Stanley #4 smooth plane for the kind of use the new Taylor flattop will be getting, and I'd recommend this highly.
