This plane is a replica of the classic English Record No. 311 shoulder plane, originally designed by Edward Preston & Sons and produced from 1935 to 1984.

A highly versatile tool, it excels at cleaning up inside corners and refining parts for tight-fitting joinery. The blade extends across the entire width of the sole, allowing you to trim precisely into the corner of a rabbet or tenon's cheek and can remove extremely thin layers—down to just a few thousandths of an inch—creating a perfect fit for strong, long-lasting joints.

Designed to function as three planes in one:
  • Shoulder plane – Use with the front extension piece in place for precise shoulder work.
  • Chisel plane – Remove the front extension for flush cuts in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Bull-nose plane – Install the included nose piece for fine detail work in corners and tight spots. Use the included shim with the bull-nose piece to increase the mouth opening as needed.
The body is precision-machined from ductile cast iron with ground soles and sides. Inside edges are finished with a baked-on coating. The 1-1/16" wide cutting iron, made from hardened tool steel (55-60 HRc), is 0.110" thick with a 25° bevel. The blade will need to be sharpened and honed before use. The blade is bedded at 20° and adjusted via a solid brass knurled adjustment screw. The handle is solid, polished brass.

Overall dimensions are 1-1/16" wide, 7-1/2" overall length, and 2-1/4" tall, with a weight of 2-1/2 lbs.

Comes in a presentation box.

    Looks good
I have not used the plane on a project yet but was able to cut a good rabbet in pine after honing the iron. The back of the iron needed to be flattened which took about 30 minutes on diamond stones. I had no other issues with the plane. I think it is a good value for the price.

    Wow! What a Great Value!
Considering the cost, I thought, this plane would be something I would have to do a lot of work on to get it working- but if it did work decently it would be well worth it. It worked very well straight out of the box! The blade was even sharp enough for a test run. Sure, it has a few minor cosmetic issues (3 tiny pits in the casting), but these do not affect the plane's function at all. I also love the 1"+ width on the blade.

    Great Chisel Plane
I've owned this plane for about five years and it is probably the best hand tool in my shop for doing exactly what I want it to do. I use is as a chisel plane to get into hard to reach spaces while repairing damaged woodwork.

Not to be mistaken for a Veritas
Make no bones about it. This is not the Veritas or the Clifton, which is available on the site. The Clifton is wonderful and is ready right out of the box. This is not. This is however, about $150 cheaper. You'll need to sharpen the blade and otherwise condition, the plane, and except the fact that it's not quite as well made. But for $150 I'm willing to do the work which took about 40 minutes and the plane works perfectly adequately for most of the chores that I'm gonna put it through which makes it a great value and for that reason I give it four stars.

    Excellent Value
This shoulder plane is as good as or better than many much more expensive brands. After a quick sharpen, it performs very well.
