This plane is inspired by the Stanley #1, manufactured from 1867 to 1943. The #1 was a compact smoothing plane originally designed for fine, detail-oriented work on small surfaces and in tight spaces. Initially marketed for children or beginners with small hands, these Stanley planes are now highly sought after by collectors, with rare examples often fetching over $2,800.

For modern woodworkers, the #1 serves as an alternative to a block plane, excelling in spot smoothing and precision tasks. Its high cutting angle and chip breaker minimizes tear-out compared to low-angle block planes. Typically used with one hand, the tote rests comfortably in the thumb web space, while the fingers grip the sides. For tricky grain, it can be operated with both hands for added control. At just 5-5/8” long, this plane has all the features of a regular size bench plane, except for a lateral blade adjuster (the Stanley No 1 didn't have one either). Light hammer taps to the side of the blade will adjust it laterally. Sharpen the blade and it will function just as well as its full-sized counterparts.

The body and frog are made from ductile cast iron. The sole and sides are precision-lapped flat across the entire length of the plane. Measuring 5-3/4" long, 1-9/16" wide, and weighing 1.3 pounds, this plane is the perfect size for children and for smaller detailed work.

The knob and tote are crafted from Sapele wood, then finished and hand-rubbed to provide a surface that feels as good as it looks. The 0.085" thick, 1-3/8"-wide tool steel iron is hardened and tempered to 55-60 HRc, offering easy sharpening and superior edge retention.

    Taylor Toolworks 5-3/4\" Smoothing Plane!
I am a professional Furniture Designer and Maker based in Chicago. I use all kinds of hand planes in my furniture shop. When I saw the smoothing plane from Taylor Toolworks... I knew I had to try it! Unpacking the shipment I was impressed right away by their careful packaging. I was also surprised by the weight of the plane, it just felt solid and well-made. The sole is completely flat right out of the box! I did have to take it apart, clean off the oil, and sharpen the blade. Now it works perfectly and a wonderful small hand plane for softening edges and detailed work. I give it 5-Stars!
