Inspired by the Stanley #1, manufactured from 1867 to 1943, this compact smoothing plane was originally designed for fine, detail-oriented work on small surfaces and in tight spaces. While it was initially marketed toward children or beginners with smaller hands, original Stanley No. 1 planes are now highly prized by collectors, with rare examples often selling for $2,800 or more.

For modern woodworkers, the #1 functions as a highly capable alternative to a block plane. Its 45° cutting angle and chip breaker provide superior control and significantly reduce tear-out compared to low-angle block planes, making it ideal for spot smoothing, delicate cleanup, and precision work.

The plane is typically used one-handed, with the tote resting naturally in the web of the thumb while the fingers grip the sides of the body. For difficult grain or added stability, it can easily be used with two hands. At just 5-7/8" long, it includes nearly all the features of a full-size bench plane—with the sole exception of a lateral blade adjuster (the original Stanley No. 1 didn’t have one either). Lateral adjustment is accomplished with light hammer taps to the side of the blade, a traditional and precise method. Properly sharpened, this plane performs on par with its larger counterparts.

The body and frog are cast from ductile cast iron, with the sole and sides precision-lapped flat across the full length of the plane. Weighing 1.5 pounds, it is an excellent size for children, smaller hands, and detailed work where control matters most.

The knob and tote are crafted from Indian Rosewood. The 0.085"-thick, 1.200"-wide tool-steel iron is hardened and tempered to HRC 55–60, striking an ideal balance between easy sharpening and excellent edge retention.
