3M™ Cubitron™ II Hookit™ Clean Sanding Film Discs feature 3M ™ proprietary Precision Shaped Ceramic Grain, a revolutionary advancement in abrasive technology. The sharp, triangular shaped ceramic mineral is designed to slice through the substrate, rather than gouging or “plowing” like conventional abrasives, resulting in a disc that cuts up to 2x as fast and lasts up to 6x as long as conventional abrasives.
These discs are ideal for a broad range of applications focused primarily on stock removal, and are effective on a wide variety of substrates, including metals, composites, gelcoat, and wood. The 3 mil film backing offers greater tear resistance than paper discs for additional durability and edge retention.
3M offers a complete line of hook-and-loop style 3M™ Hookit™ discs for work spaces where adhesive backed discs may become contaminated by dust or dirt. They are often used in applications where a 3M™ Stikit™ disc may be too aggressive, as Hookit™ discs tend to leave finer finishes than adhesive backed discs. Hookit™ sanding discs conveniently attach to a hook-and-loop backup disc pad (sold separately), can be removed cleanly and easily, and can be re-used again and again for the extent of the abrasive life.
Sandpaper discs cut better and last longer when dust isn’t loading the cutting surface of the abrasives. 3M ™ proprietary multi-hole pattern on Clean Sanding products evacuates dust at a higher rate than 5 or 6-hole products. This hole design doesn’t require alignment of holes with the disc pad, making disc changes quick and simple. Open coat construction means the abrasive grains are placed with space between them to help evacuate dust and other sanding debris and avoid clogging the cutting edge of the grains. The load-resistant coating allows the disc to continue cutting even when sanding softwoods, paints, and other materials that would, otherwise, clog the disc and hinder sanding ability. All of this adds up to increased productivity and reduced material consumption.
What makes 3M ™ Cubitron II ™ abrasives so special??
The secret behind the revolutionary performance of Cubitron™ II abrasives lies in their Precision-Shaped Grain (PSG) Technology — the result of decades of technological advances in ceramic abrasive and microreplication technologies. These precision-shaped grains are uniformly sized triangular structures that are super-sharp and evenly distributed onto the backing, allowing them to slice through material like a knife through butter rather than gouging or plowing as other abrasives. These triangular shaped grains are electrostatically oriented on the backing with their cutting edges facing the work surface for the most efficient cut and even wear. As the triangular shaped grain wears, the cutting edge continuously fractures to form new, sharp points and edges that continue to slice through material, wear evenly, provide super-long life and produce a consistent finish. This allows 3M Cubitron II ™ belts and discs to run cooler and keep on working—long after conventional abrasives have dulled, shelled, glazed over and been thrown out. Conventional abrasives tend to be irregular and blocky in shape. So, instead of a clean, machining action, conventional grain tends to “plow” through material, causing heat to build up both in the workpiece and the abrasive — resulting in a slower cut, shorter abrasive life and a lower quality finish. Cubitron II ™ abrasive discs are available resin-bonded to a stiff, super-tough, tear-resistant film backing offering greater tear resistance than paper discs providing greater durability and edge retention. Cubitron II ™ discs and belts lasts significantly longer than conventional abrasive allowing more parts to be sanded per disc with fewer disc changes.
