In the small village of Bystrice in the Czech Republic, the Narex factory has been producing world-class edge tools for over 100 years. Founded in 1919 by local blacksmith Vaclav Richter, the company began by manufacturing chisels and gimlets. Today, Narex is best known for its extensive range of high-quality, reasonably priced bench chisels.

Although the Narex factory has modernized considerably over the past century, it continues to preserve many traditional manufacturing methods. Chisels are still produced at the original Bystrice factory using old-world drop-forging techniques that enhance the strength and durability of the steel.

To commemorate its 100th anniversary, Narex introduced the Richter Extra premium bench chisel line, named in honor of its founder. These are the finest chisels Narex has produced in its history. Made from premium materials, subjected to advanced heat treatment, and manufactured to exacting standards, Richter Extra chisels are designed to rival the finest premium chisels on the market.

Richter chisel blades are manufactured from premium chrome vanadium (Cr-V) steel using traditional drop-forging methods. The blades are hardened, cryogenically treated, and tempered to achieve a minimum hardness of 62 HRC.

Precision grinding and polishing produce a mirror-like finish, while ultra-thin side bevels allow access into tight spaces, making these chisels ideal for cleaning out dovetails and performing other precision woodworking tasks. The cutting bevel is ground to 24 degrees.

Following initial hardening, the blades undergo cryogenic treatment using liquid nitrogen to cool the steel to −190°C (−310°F). This process alters the steel's microstructure, enhancing its strength, toughness, and wear resistance for exceptional edge retention and durability.

These limited-edition chisels feature handles crafted from responsibly sourced African padauk, prized for its rich color and beautiful grain.

Each ergonomically shaped handle is carefully sanded and finished with friction-applied shellac for exceptional protection, comfort, and control. Solid stainless-steel ferrules help prevent splitting, while leather washers absorb the shock of mallet strikes.

Narex Richter chisels are backed by a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects in materials, design, or workmanship. In the event of a qualifying defect, the chisel will be repaired or replaced free of charge.
