A hoop setter is an essential tool for properly seating the steel hoop (katsura) on Japanese chisels. The hoop protects the handle end from splitting when struck with a metal hammer, but it must be set below the end of the chisel handle and secure to perform correctly.

This setter makes the job quick and accurate. Simply place it over the chisel handle and strike it to drive the hoop just below the surface without damaging the wood or the hoop itself. Unlike improvised methods, the hoop setter ensures consistent pressure around the entire circumference, preventing misalignment or gaps.

With the hoop properly set, your chisels will deliver decades of dependable service in demanding joinery work.

Will set hoops on chisel handles to 1-3/8" in diameter.

(Do not use chisels with a blade width of 6 mm or less, as they may break).
