Some woodworkers find pencil gauges as much or more useful than pin or knife style marking gauges when laying down lines parallel to straight or curved edges. Many find these marking tools indispensable for marking out design elements, bevels, curves, or joinery. A pencil gauge is especially handy for laying down a line that does not slice or scratch the wood and can be easily erased.

These pencil gauges are made by Joseph Marples in the UK. They are crafted from hard-wearing Indian Rosewood. The head is half-round with a solid brass locking knob. The half-round shape of the head fits the hand perfectly. We offer one version with a flat face and another with a solid brass double-curve attachment that can lay down a line parallel to a concave or convex curve. The beams have rounded edges. The supplied pencil is secured in the hole in the beam via a solid brass screw. It can mark a line up to as close as 1/8” and as far as 6-1/2” from an edge.
