The Ironbark Fully Adjustable Spokeshave represents the first true advancement in spokeshave design in decades. Drawing inspiration from classically-designed bevel-up wooden spokeshaves, Ironbark combines modern engineering, premium materials, and precision craftsmanship to deliver a woodworking experience unlike any other.
The spokeshave features a solid brass main body, two stainless steel depth-adjustment screws, wooden handles, and brass-knobbed spindles at the end of each handle. When the brass knobs are tightened, the blade is securely locked into a precision dovetail. To remove the blade, simply loosen both brass knobs, press the blade toward the body, and slide it forward through the mouth. When reinstalling the blade, the stainless adjustment screws automatically return it to its previous depth setting.
For fine-tuning, lightly loosen the brass knobs so the blade is only lightly held, then back off the stainless adjustment screws. During a test cut, the blade will settle against the stainless screws. Slowly advance the screws while taking practice shavings until the desired cut is achieved, then fully tighten the brass knobs to lock the blade in place.
The spokeshave blade is completely flat, with no tangs or protrusions to interfere with sharpening. It is a bevel-down blade held at an exceptionally low cutting angle of 35°, an uncommon configuration in modern spokeshaves. This geometry provides outstanding control over shaving thickness and allows for smooth, effortless paring on end grain. When sharpening, it is important not to exceed a 35° bevel angle.
Because the blade bevel also functions as the “heel” of the sole, the slight relief angle between the brass toe and the blade allows shaving thickness to be adjusted by subtle wrist movement. Tilting the spokeshave forward to ride on the brass toe lifts the blade slightly for finer shavings, while allowing the tool to relax back onto the blade bevel produces a heavier cut.
