Quick Grip Dovetail Vise Compatible with Matchfit GRR-Rip Clamps
This Quick Grip Dovetail Vise is a compact, portable bench vise—ideal for anyone without a traditional workbench and vise who needs reliable workholding, or for those who want a dedicated vise for fine detail work such as joinery and dovetailing. It also raises your work by 3", bringing it to a more ergonomic height.
The vise consists of an L-shaped base that can be secured to any surface using a pair of C-clamps, F-style clamps, or Quick-Adjust clamps. The base measures 22" long by 2-1/2" wide, and the rear fixed jaw is 3" tall, 1-3/4" thick, and 18" long. The back jaw features dovetail grooves on both the top and front faces. It also has two holes in the bottom that accept the feet of the MatchFit clamps, with two T-knobs on the rear that secure the clamps in place.
The front movable jaw measures 17-1/2" wide by 2-3/4" tall and includes two brackets that slip over the MatchFit GRR-Rip clamp heads.
All wood parts are made from hard red oak and are left unfinished. You may apply a finish if desired, but we recommend avoiding film finishes (such as lacquer, polyurethane, or shellac), as these can make the surfaces too slick for optimal workholding. The edges are left sharp so you can ease them to your preference.
The core of this vise’s functionality lies in the Microjig MatchFit GRR-Rip dovetail clamps (DVC-625QCK2). Once the vise is secured to your work surface, the GRR-Rip clamps are inserted into holes in the bottom of the fixed rear jaw and secured with knobs from the back. After removing the anti-mar pads, the front movable jaw is slipped down over the clamp heads and into the two brackets.
You now have a quick-adjust vise that securely holds a wide variety of workpieces. Tighten the jaw by squeezing the clamp handles. To release, simply pinch the release levers on the clamp handles.
This vise can securely hold a wide range of parts, as shown below:
- Cutting Dovetails: Holds vertical parts while you mark, cut, and remove waste. It can also secure two parts together while transferring layout marks. (See video below.)
- Edge Work: Holds parts on edge and accommodates material up to 4-1/2" thick. Perfect for holding small drawers or boxes while you work on the sides. (Figure 1)
- Vertical Workholding: Secures long, upright parts. The distance between the clamps is 13-3/4". (Figure 2)
- Tapered Parts: The jaws pivot up to 10°, allowing secure holding of tapered components. (Figure 3)
- Joinery Support: Holds two pieces at 90°—ideal for screwing, doweling, or transferring layout marks. The vertical piece is clamped against the rear jaw by the front jaw, while the horizontal piece rests on top of the rear jaw and is secured with additional MatchFit clamps. (Figure 4)
Note: The front jaw is intentionally positioned to close lower than the rear jaw. This allows you to see if parts aligned at 90° are flush. It also allows for transferring marks from tails to pin boards and prevents accidentally marking the front jaw with a knife when transferring pins to tail boards during dovetailing.
- Wide Vertical Parts: To secure parts that hang below your worksurface and don’t fit between the clamp rails, remove the front jaw and reinstall the anti-mar pads on the clamps. Then slide the dovetail clamp heads into the horizontal dovetail grooves on the front face of the rear jaw. This allows vertical clamping of parts up to 20" wide. (Figure 5)
Important: This vise is designed to work exclusively with MatchFit GRR-Rip Quick Adjust Clamps and is not compatible with other MatchFit or track saw clamps. Clamps are not included with the vise unless explicitly stated. If you'd like a set of clamps included, please select the variation that includes them.
