Clifton #4 Bench Plane, Bedrock Frog, Grey Cast Iron Body & Frog, 0.150" O1 Cryo Blade
This is a #4 bench plane with a 2" wide blade used for smoothing surfaces.
Clifton Bench Planes are both highly attractive and functional tools, designed to give users a flat and smooth finish. Ideal for both amateur and professional cabinet makers, as well as discerning woodworkers. These planes are ready to use straight out of the box. They require no extensive flattening or fettling, although honing the blade will ensure the finest shavings.
These planes are crafted from the finest materials: the body and frog are made from accurately machined grey cast iron, with fully ground sides and sole. The knob and handle are shaped, sanded, and sealed walnut, offering both durability and comfort. The cutting iron is made from cryogenically treated O1 steel, hardened and tempered to 60-62 Rockwell C, and precision surface ground to 0.150″ thick. The blade will take and hold a superior edge while remaining easy to sharpen. The cap iron is a single-piece design, providing rigid clamping. Other key components, such as frog locating pins and screws, are ground polished stainless steel. The lever cap is a polished grey iron casting, and both the screws and adjusting wheel are polished brass. The Y-lever or yoke is a solid one-piece brass casting, with the adjusting lever and additional parts made from polished stainless steel.
The frog and frog seating in the body of these planes follow the Bedrock design, first introduced on early Stanley planes. This design ensures a full-face, fully machined mating of the frog with the seat, ensuring absolute stability for the cutting iron. When combined with the extra-thick Clifton cutting iron and cap iron, this setup minimizes chatter and tearout. This mechanism is one of the most rigid and effective clamping systems available in any bench plane.
The benefit of this design is that it allows the cutting iron to be advanced for a virtually "zero" mouth opening, enabling the finest shavings to be taken, even on the toughest woods. The Bedrock design also allows the mouth opening to be adjusted without disassembling the frog and iron assembly. Adjusting the mouth is simple: loosen the two outer screws located at the back of the frog seating pad, then turn the central screw clockwise to close the mouth or counterclockwise to open it.
