Check out Yoav Liberman's Taylor Toolworks Bench Plane Review and guidance on fine-tuning these planes, featured in a Fine Woodworking article.

The "BR" Series Hand Planes are modeled after the legendary Stanley Bedrock planes, produced from 1898 to 1945. Renowned as the "top of the line" in Stanley’s lineup, Bedrock planes remain highly sought after by woodworkers and collectors. These planes are distinguished by their robust construction, increased weight, enhanced rigidity, and signature flat-top side design. Another key feature is the innovative frog adjustment mechanism, which allows precise mouth adjustments without removing the iron.

This #2 Smoothing Plane is the smallest in the Bedrock series, making it perfect for fine detail work where larger planes would be cumbersome. Ideal for tasks like smoothing small surfaces, edges, or intricate areas on furniture and joinery, the compact size of the #2 allows it to excel in tight spaces. It’s particularly useful for refining small joints such as dovetails and tenons. Woodworkers who create small crafts, musical instruments, or toys appreciate the #2 for its precision and ease of handling. Its smaller size also makes it an excellent choice for children or users with smaller hands.

It's the perfect tool to remove minor imperfections, tool marks and chatter left by other planes or machinery. When finely tuned, it can take very thin shavings and create a smooth, polished and ready to finish surface.

The body and frog are made from ductile cast iron. The sole and sides are precision-lapped flat across the entire length of the plane. Measuring 7-1/2" long, 2" wide, and weighing 3.125 pounds, this plane strikes the perfect balance of size and mass for tackling a variety of finishing tasks.

The knob and tote are crafted from Sapele wood, then finished and hand-rubbed to provide a surface that feels as good as it looks. The 0.120"-thick, 2"-wide cryogenically treated O1 steel iron is hardened and tempered to 54-58 HRc, will take a keen edge and offers easy sharpening and superior edge retention.

The frog and its seating are designed based on the early Stanley Bedrock planes. This approach provides fully machined, full-surface contact between the frog and the body, ensuring maximum stability for the cutting iron. Paired with a robust 1/8"-thick iron and cap iron, this setup significantly minimizes chatter and tearout, resulting in one of the most rigid and efficient frog clamping systems available in any bench plane.

This design also allows the cutting iron to advance for an almost "zero-clearance" mouth opening, enabling the creation of exceptionally fine shavings, even on dense or challenging woods. Furthermore, the mouth opening can be adjusted without disassembling the frog and iron assembly. To adjust, simply loosen the two outer screws at the back of the frog seating pad, then turn the central screw clockwise to reduce the mouth size or counterclockwise to enlarge it.

#2 planer knob for raising and lowering blade.
Why is that know so large for such a small hand plane? My 5 1/2 is the same size. With 50 yrs of machine work under my belt I re-machined the knob from 1.247" to .900". Now It can be used like a normal hand plane. There needs to be redesigned right from scratch.

    Small handle
The handle is very tiny and I can not fit my fingers around the handle. I will try to just push the handle and see how that works. It looks good though. I have not tuned it yet.

#2 Premium Bedrock Style Plane First Impressions
Overall this is a reasonably good plane. I had to flatten the back of the iron. The iron arrived thicker in the middle than the outer edges. It required a coarse diamond plate and some effort to get it flat. The chip breaker arrived with a relatively thick blunt edge on the bevel that jammed up the cut shaving and resulted in a rough cut. After honing the bevel on the chip breaker to reduce the thickness of the blunt edge, and moving The chip breaker back from the cutting edge of the iron, the plane worked quite well. Sole of the plane seems quite flat. Will put it to work now.

    GREAT Little Plane
The plane is well made and needs some cleanup when unpacked, I flattened the back of the blade and honed the already sharp cutting edge. Plane works great! Love the price as i was not going to spend 3x as much on an No. 2 plane that will not see as much use as a larger smoothing or jack plane.
