The Patent Pending Accu-Burr ™ Carbide Burnisher is a game changer when it comes to turning precise, consistent, and effective hooks (or burrs) on cabinet scrapers. No burnisher will produce better results with less effort and less skill. Guaranteed. This completely new type of burnisher is a collaboration of Blackburn Tools, Union Manufacturing and Lakeshore Carbide.

The heart of the Accu-Burr™ is a 3/16" diameter carbide rod with three precision shaped V-grooves of slightly differing angles (5°, 10°, and 15°) ground in the center of the rod. These grooves create burrs on both sides of any scraper edge in a single pass. The 5° groove makes fine hooks for refining finishes or when working with thin venerers, the 10° groove (most common) makes medium hooks for everyday use and the 15° groove makes heavy hooks for shaping wood or removing finishes.

The Accu-Burr™ will turn a precise and consistent hook on:

any imaginable size and shape card scraper, it can turn burrs in concave profiles as tight as 3/32” radius
any thickness card scraper from as thin as 0.010” up to 0.100” thick
any hardness scraper, even High-Speed Steel versions with a hardness of RC 65
thin and profiled scrapers that are held high in a vise that would normally deflect and pose difficulties with a traditional rod burnisher

How to use:

Prepare your scraper by filing and honing the edges and faces. Secure your scraper in a vise. Hold your Accu-Burr™ carbide burnisher perpendicular to the scraper edge and centered on either the fine, medium, or coarse groove (the deepest groove is for the coarse burr). Applying light even downward pressure on the burnisher, draw it firmly and smoothly along the length of the prepared scraper edge (a drop of oil on the burnisher will make this action even smoother). The Accu-Burr ™ is self-centering and will draw out a burr on both sides in a single motion. This burnishing will raise a burr that can be barely felt with your finger; if no burr is felt, repeat as needed, but with increasing force, until a nearly imperceptible burr is formed along the entire length of the scraper. A burr can be refreshed 2-3 times by taking an additional pass or two with the Accu-Burr ™ before the edge will need to be refiled and rehoned.

Two version of the Accu-Burr ™ are available: a 3” long unhandled (rod alone) or the “Junior” with two solid brass handles with an overall length of 5-1/4”. The unhandled rod can be used alone, but the Junior handled version does provide some additional leverage. You can make you own handles by adding 3/16” compression fittings (available separately) to both ends of the rod. You can make your own wooden handles using Union Manufacturing solid brass ferrules (available separately).

Or you can add cost effective handles using 3/16" brass brake line compression fittings (available separately).

AB2 Information:

The traditional method for preparing a scraper plane blade involved filing and honing a 45-degree edge on the blade, followed by forming a hook or burr on this bevel at a 30-degree angle. Achieving the perfect burr was a tricky process and typically required a dedicated burnisher or jig. For generations, this approach was believed to produce the best scraper edge for achieving the finest surface finish. The Accu-Burr AB2 changes this paradigm by enabling users to create a burr on both edges of a square-edged scraper blade, suitable for use with popular scraper plane models like the Stanley #12, #112, and the ever-popular #80.

The AB2 is constructed from the same carbide material and possesses the same geometry as the AB1, with grooves at 5, 10, and 15 degrees. However, it has a larger diameter (1/4” instead of 3/16”) and a longer length (4” instead of 3”). The AB2 is designed to accommodate scrapers up to 5/32” thick, while the AB1 is intended for scrapers up to 0.100”.

While the AB1 rod is relatively small and may be challenging to handle, it performs optimally when equipped with handles. In contrast, the AB2 is more substantial in size and possesses sufficient mass to operate effectively, even without handles.

    Great Results
I have several burnishers and have watched videos to try to be hone my technique, by dropping the angle, etc. Still hit or miss. So far the Accu-Burr has given stellar results. I am not sure why it works so much better than my other burnishers, but I am sold.

    Worked just as described.
I purchased the 3/16" x 3" AB1 Accu-Burr. I've tried to raise burrs on scrapers a couple of times in the past with no luck. Using the AB1, I was able raise a burr in a couple of passes. I highly recommend the Accu-Burr.

It works just like they said it would.
I just recently received my Accu-burr and tried it out on an old Sandvik scraper and it quickly put a very useful burr on the tool and I was very pleased at how easy it was to use. When using the old burnishing rod I always worried about slipping and injuring my hand on the edge of the scraper. The shallow bevels help to keep the tool centered. I may add handles at some point. I'm very pleased with the thought that went into this tool and the quality of the steel.

I\'m very excited about this tool!
I was just introduced to cabinet scrapers and I'm impressed with how effective these simple tools are. But replacing the burr has proven a challenge. The Accu-burr Jr looks to take the guess work out of holding the steel rod at just the right angle.

    Best Burnisher Ever
I have had problems in the past with setting an edge for cabinet scrapers. I have watched numerous videos. I even had someone show me how to create the burr. Alas no success. But with the Accu-Burr, I was able to create a burr on my first try. I have also set a burr on a goose neck scraper with relative ease, which came from the excellent video that I found on You Tube. This is a great product and I highly recommend it.

    Should be called \"Easy Burr\"...
I just sharpened my first scraper using the 1/4" Accu-Burr, and results were excellent. I've been turning the burr with a standard hardened burnisher and had good results, but the burr turned by the center groove of the Accu-Burr immediately produced finer, more delicate shavings on white oak, plus the burr seems to last longer than my by-eye burr (which was also more aggressive). I'm happy I purchased the Accu-Burr. If you haven't watched Mike's videos on how to prep and sharpen scrapers, you should definitely do so. And give serious consideration to buying his sharpening jig kit! I had all the hardware to make my own setup, but following his instructions made sharpening scrapers MUCH easier!

Briliant, worked first time with no skill needed.
I cannot recommend this product enough! ZERO skill needed.
